Baby Eliza!

2 weeks old!

Eliza Jane Black joined our family on November 16, 2017.  She was 8 pounds 2 ounces, and 20 inches long when she was born.  She has lots of dark hair, and is a little cutie.  I love her inquisitive little eyes, and her gentle spirit.  So far she has been sleeping a lot, and unlike my other babies, she has not been putting on weight super quick.  I think that is because she sleeps so much, but she is learning to love eating and I think will start gaining weight pretty quickly.

Now for the Birth Story:

I was induced with Eliza a week before her due date (due date was November 23rd).  We did this for a few reasons, mostly because I need to have a hernia surgery done before the end of the year, and I need to be completely healed before that.  (Still not sure how I am going to be able to go through surgery with a newborn...)  But also because we wanted her birthday to be separate and apart from Thanksgiving.  And the doctor was going to be out of town the week of Thanksgiving.  So I decided to be induced ahead of time-- my first time ever being induced!

My mom came out on Monday of that week to help me prepare for the new baby.  She helped me sew a skirt and matching quilt for the crib.  It turned out really cute!  She also sewed a car seat cover, and then she helped me make a couple frozen meals, and we also went to Costco to buy some more frozen meals.  I loved that time with my mom, and she really helped me feel more prepared for the baby to come.

November 16th came (finally!) and I called the hospital to see if they had a room for me.  They were full, and told me I would have to wait until later that afternoon to come in.  That was actually a blessing in disguise, because I got to go and see the afternoon performance of the Nutcracker, in which Ben had a lead role (Fritz).  And he did amazing!  He is a natural actor!  I was so proud of him.

I got a phone call from the hospital right at the beginning of watching the Nutcracker.  They told me I could come in at 3:00.  So I just had time to finish watching the Nutcracker, go home and get my packed bag, and say goodbye to the kids and my mom.  Then Gabe and I were off to the hospital!

We checked in, and they gave me a cytotek (spelling?)  to ripen my cervix.  Then the waiting began.  At first I was worried nothing was happening.  It seemed my contractions were not getting much harder or closer together.  After about 6 hours of waiting, I was getting really bored and not sure anything was going to happen.

The nurse came in and checked me at 9:30, I think I was dilated to a 3 by that point.  She said she would come back in one hour.  In that hour, the contractions really picked up and became very painful.  But I was determined to wait until 10:30 when the nurse would come back in and check me.  She finally came in, checked me again and said I was dilated to a 4.5.  I immediately told her I wanted an epidural.  So the anesthesiologist came in and worked on me for what felt like forever, meanwhile the contractions were coming hard and strong.  It was so hard to sit still.  Finally he was done and I laid back down.  I kept waiting for the epidural numbness to set in, but it didn't come!  I started groaning and screaming from the pain each new contraction brought.  Then I felt a strong pushing sensation, and knew I had to push this baby out.  The nurses were scrambling around me, they had just called Dr. Baer and he was not at the hospital yet.  They kept telling me NOT to push, and to wait for the doctor.  But I really needed to push.  Finally the on call doctor, Dr. York, came in and said the heart beat was too low, we need to deliver this baby.  That made me worry, is the baby okay?  So I pushed a few times (all without help from the epidural), and suddenly she came out. Little Eliza Jane was born at 11:20 pm. And then the epidural finally kicked in.  :)

We are so grateful she is here!

Randomness

Ben participated in the handball tournament at school, and he came in second place for the boys.  Way to go Ben!

Thomas being goofy.

Ben and his "Colorado cookie" he made for a school project.

This deer (Ashlee affectionately calls him "Sid") ate all of our pumpkins on the front doorstep.

Ben was in the Nutcracker with all of his 4th grade class.  He got one of the main parts, "Fritz," and did an awesome job!  He also had another part as a Russian baker.

Halloween

I had a tough time deciding what we should be for Halloween this year.  I love the idea of doing a family theme, but some people are too opinionated (AHEM children) about what they want to be these days, so it is nearly impossible to think of a family costume theme that everyone will be happy about.

So no theme this year.  Just went along with what everyone wanted to be.  And unfortunately I neglected to get pictures of the kids in their costumes.  Ashlee was a jailbird, Ben was a jawa from Star Wars, and Sam was a policeman (because he wanted to put Ashlee in jail).  Gabe wanted to be a fidget spinner, but didn't work out too well at the last minute.

With my very pregnant belly, I decided I wanted to be a snowman (saw this idea online) and Thomas is the only one I can still dress up however I want, so we were snowmen together.  It was really fun having a little sidekick, and I think Thomas liked it too.

My friend made his hat for me, and I made the body costume from a tutorial I found online.  I think it turned out pretty cute!

Here is our very festive Halloween dinner of mummies and blood, with some jack-o-lantern oranges and apples. If I had had more time, I would have made them monster apples.

And here is the most important part of Halloween, the loot!  Some friends came over, and they all had a huge candy trading party in our front room!  So fun!

Dart Warz

Here's the birthday boy!

We went to Dart Warz for Ben's 10th birthday.  We figured number 10 is a big deal so we splurged a little.  This party was a huge success.  I think all the boys (and Ashlee) had a great time!

We did a glow party, where they play in the dark with the black lights.  It was awesome!

Here is the party crew, eating cupcakes and telling jokes.

This party was nice and easy (as much as I could handle being very big and pregnant), and was a big hit for everyone!  My kids kept talking about it for days afterward.
Birthday party = success!

Fall Sports

We have been busy with sports again this Fall.

As if we don't keep Ashlee busy enough with school and piano, Ashlee was on TWO volleyball teams this Fall.

Here is the MacLaren school A team.  Gabe helped as an assistant coach.

And here is the YMCA team, along with Ben.

Gabe was the coach of this team.
Why did we have Ashlee on both teams you ask?  Well, it was for Ben. Ben has been on Ashlee's team for the last few seasons, and playing up at her level.  We want to keep challenging him by playing a few levels ahead.  But he couldn't play on her school team, and at the YMCA we didn't think he'd want to play on a team with all girls that were 3 years older than him.  So we put Ashlee on the team too.  And with Daddy as the coach, it was a winning combination.

Ashlee loves volleyball, and didn't mind the extra practice.  She really improved her serve this season, and now has a killer serve.

Ben played really well too, and helped push his team to victory.

Now lets talk about Sam.  Sam also played two sports this season.  We signed him up for YMCA soccer, where he made quite a few goals!

This is Sam with his coach.

The other sport Sam did was Cross country.  At first I wasn't planning on signing him up for it, but I noticed when we would go watch volleyball practices and games, Sam wanted to go run laps around the indoor track.  Then he told me he really likes running.  When I mentioned cross country, he seemed excited to do it.  So here he is, after one of his cross country meets.

We were super busy, making sure each kid got to where they needed to be during the week.  Kudos to Gabe for taking time out to coach both volleyball teams.  I think it was a successful season!

I love this boy

This boy just melts my heart.  He can get away with practically everything, just because I don't have the heart to tell him no.  He is very spoiled, but so adorable at the same time.

He has a passion for books, cars, trucks (anything with wheels), and balls.

Lately we have been going to storytime at the library, and we get new books every week.  That is a good thing, because he insists on me reading them to him 15+ times a day.

And we are starting him out young with exercising at the gym.  Gotta get those little muscles in shape, little man!

Gabe Goes Hiking in Seattle

A friend of Gabe's invited him along on a trip to Seattle, where they would be hiking around Mt. Rainier and the Olympics.  They had a great time (despite all the fires burning around them-- they had to be evacuated from the first hike.)

These pictures are gorgeous!!!  I wish I could go!
